Periodicities in Solar Flare Occurrence: Analysis of Cycles 19–23

چکیده

Mid-range periodicities in solar flare occurrence have been analyzed with new methods for cycles 19–23. During cycle 23, periodicities of 129-d and 33.5-d were in operation. Five episodes of high activity occurred periodically with the 129-d period. The 33.5-d periodicity mainly operated for energetic flares. Results for cycles 19–21 are generally in agreement with previous analyses. For cycle 19, the 51-d periodicity is confirmed to be statistically significant. In the spectrum for cycle 20, two peaks are found at 84 d and 129 d. The 129-d periodicity was in operation for 8 cycles of 129 d. The 153-d periodicity, which operated during cycle 21, was more effective for modulating occurrence rates of energetic flares than those of less energetic flares. No statistically significant periodicities are found from occurrence rates of energetic flares (≥M1.0) of cycle 22. In the power spectra of major flare occurrence times for the time intervals analyzed by Ozguc & Atac and Bai, strongest peaks are found at 73 d, 76 d, and 51 d, in agreement with their results, but these periodicities are not statistically significant. It is interesting that the periods of 51, 129, and 153 days are very close to integral multiples of 25.5 days. Subject headings: Sun: activity—Sun: flares—Sun: periodicity April 8, 2003

Solar Flare Cycles

We present a review of different solar flare periodicity intervals. Our analysis includes a statistical investigation of flare occurrence and N-S hemispheric distribution over the last three 11-yr solar cycles (SCs 21-23, corresponding to the period 1976-2001). Moreover, we try to estimate if there is any connection between the flare activity and the strength of solar cycles. For that purpose, ...

Periodicities in the occurrence of solar coronal mass ejections

Recent overwhelming evidences (Hiremath 2009a and references there in) show that sun indeed strongly influences the earth’s climate and environment. In addition to well known sunspot activity, right from the era of discovery by Galileo, other activity phenomena such as flares and coronal mass ejections are also the main drivers that input vast amount of energy, mass and momentum into the earth’...

Solar Latitudinal Distribution of Solar Flares around the Sun and Their Association with Forbush Decreases during the Period of 1986 to 2003

Solar flare events of high importance were utilised to study solar latitudinal frequency distribution of the solar flares in northern and southern hemisphere for the solar cycle 22 to recent solar cycle 23. A statistical analysis was performed to obtain their relationship with sudden storm commencement (SSCs) and Forbush decrease events (Fd) of cosmic ray intensity. An 11-year cyclic variation ...

Magnetically Preferred Solar Longitudes: Reality?

The observed persistence of specific periodicities detected in time series associated with solar surface magnetic activity over several solar cycles has led to numerous papers supporting the existence of preferred longitudes. Recent analysis of the past 120 years of sunspot number data showed that no observed periodicity remained coherent for durations greater than two 11-year solar cycles. Her...

The North−south Asymmetry of Soft X- Ray Flare Index during Solar Cycles

In this paper the N−S asymmetry of the soft X-ray flare index (FISXR) during the solar cycles 21, 22 and 23 has been analyzed. The results show the existence of a real N−S asymmetry which is strengthened during solar minimum. The slope of the regression lines fitted to the daily values of asymmetry time series has been found to be negative in all the three cycles. The yearly asymmetry curve can...
